Urinary Tract Infection Treatment in Lakeland, FL

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are pretty common and typically minor, but they should still be treated! It’s actually important to have a UTI treated to prevent complications. We’d like to help you understand UTIs better, so we’ve prepared some questions and answers about them. Keep reading to learn more about UTIs and treatment with us at Elite Health Center & Family Care.

How do you know if you have a urinary tract infection?

If you have any of the symptoms commonly associated with UTIs, you should see a professional. If you have a UTI, the professional should be able to prevent the infection from spreading and causing any potentially serious complications.

UTIs don’t always have signs and symptoms, but when there are signs and symptoms, they can include:
  • Urine that looks red or pink, which could indicate blood in the urine
  • Passing urine frequently and in small amounts
  • A strong and constant urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • Cloudy looking urine
  • A strong smell to the urine
  • Pelvic pain in women

There can be other signs and symptoms too, depending on the specific type of UTI.

What are the main causes of UTIs?

UTIs are caused by bacteria getting into the urinary tract through the urethra, but there are different kinds of UTIs with different bacterial causes. For example, an infection of the bladder (cystitis) is usually caused by E. coli bacteria. Sexual intercourse can lead to cystitis, but a person doesn’t have to be sexually active in order to develop it. An infection of the urethra (urethritis) can occur when gastrointestinal bacteria spread to the urethra.

UTIs occur mainly in females, and some risk factors specific to females are sexual activity, some kinds of birth control, and menopause. There can be other risk factors, like a blockage in the urinary tract, a suppressed immune system, or catheter use.

Why is it important to treat a UTI?

When a UTI is treated promptly and professionally, there will be a lower risk of complications. However, if a UTI isn’t treated, it can lead to serious complications like:
  • Permanent kidney damage
  • Recurrent infections
  • Urethral narrowing in men
  • A risk in pregnant women of delivering premature or low birth-weight babies
  • A potentially life-threatening complication called sepsis

Getting a UTI treated is usually really easy! Typically, treatment is just a simple prescription medication.

What should I do if I have a urinary tract infection?

The best thing to do for a UTI is to go see a professional at a clinic like ours. The professional can prescribe an antibiotic to fight the bacteria and cure the infection. After a few days of taking the antibiotic, your symptoms should clear up! However, you should keep taking the antibiotic for as long as the professional recommends. This will help ensure the infection clears up completely. If you need medication for any pain the infection is causing, the professional may be able to provide that too. There are also treatments for frequent UTIs.

At Elite Health Center & Family Care, we provide treatment for UTIs, so you can come see us if you or a family member has a UTI or any of the symptoms. Contact us today if you have any other questions about UTIs or if you’d like an appointment with us. We hope to hear from you soon!
