Prenatal Care Clinic in Lakeland, FL

When should you schedule your first prenatal appointment?

Schedule your first prenatal visit around 7-8 weeks (or 4 weeks after you miss your period). Getting early prenatal care is necessary to ensure that you and your baby are healthy from the start of the pregnancy.

What should you expect during your first prenatal visit?

During your first prenatal visit, your provider will:
• Review your health and medical history
• Do Prenatal teaching (including nutrition, diet/exercise, foods to avoid, travel restrictions, Zika virus etc).
• Discuss the schedule of your prenatal visits
• Determine your height and weight to ensure that you will gain a healthy amount of weight during your pregnancy.
• Obtain a urine sample to identify any urinary or bladder infections (done at every visit).
• Obtain a blood sample (you will be sent to Quest or Labcorp based on your insurance) to help determine your blood type, overall health or any underlying issues that could affect you or the baby.
• Do a Pap test to screen for HPV/ cervical cancer if you have not had this test done recently.
• Test for certain sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, Hepatitis B and syphilis. These tests are required by state law and will be repeated twice in the pregnancy.
• Order a 1st trimester and 2nd trimester ultrasound so the provider can learn more about your baby’s development and monitor its growth

Medications: Talk with your provider about any medications you take to be ensure that they’re safe to take during the pregnancy.

Health conditions: Chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, advanced maternal age, heart disease, multiple gestation, epilepsy, and obesity can all affect you and the baby during the pregnancy and you will be referred to a high-risk OB specialist.

Nutrition: You will need to add additional nutrients (Prenatal vitamin) to your diet, such as folic acid and iron that will be vital for you and baby. You’ll also need to know about which foods you should avoid or limit like certain types of fish (high-mercury). sushi, raw/undercooked meats, and eggs.

What pregnancy services are available?
Medical care: Throughout pregnancy and during the delivery of your baby.
Support and guidance: From teaching about diet and nutrition to advice about exercise and weight management or information about breastfeeding and advice on cord blood banking – we’re here to guide you.

Prenatal care schedule: During a normal pregnancy, you will see your provider at the following times.
• Weeks 8-27 (First two trimesters): You will see the provider once a month (every 4 weeks).
• Weeks 28–35: You will see the OB doctor once every two weeks.
• Weeks 36–40 through delivery: You will see the OB doctor once a week.

Ultrasound: An ultrasound will be ordered to assess the growth and development of your baby. An ultrasound is usually done in the first trimester to confirm the pregnancy. A second trimester ultrasound will be done between weeks 16-20 to assess the overall growth and development of the baby. Additional ultrasounds may be performed at any time during the pregnancy if needed.

Should you consider genetic testing?

During the first and second trimester of pregnancy, a variety of tests including: blood, Pap smear (if needed), genetic testing (Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle cell disease, Quad screen etc) can be performed to determine the health of your baby. Whether you desire testing or not is a very intimate decision and any of these tests should be discussed at your first prenatal visit.
