Why are well-woman exams important?
The exams are so important because they can detect signs of serious health conditions like breast cancer. If an exam detects any signs of a health condition, the provider may be able to prevent the development of the condition. The exams can also screen for signs of common, minor conditions that could become serious if they’re left untreated. Additionally, the exams are great opportunities for the patient to bring up any health concerns, such as changes in their period frequency, painful menstruation, or general pelvic pain. The patient can also bring up anything relating to reproductive planning or contraception.
During a well-woman exam, the provider will offer any preventive care services and other the patient requires. These services can include a pap smear exam, STI screening, and any testing the patient needs if they’re at risk for a particular health issue. The services provided in well-woman exams can help the patient stay healthy, protect their partner, and birth healthy children.
When should I get a well-woman exam?
Women have different health needs, but all women need regular well-woman exams. These changes are indicators that a woman should start getting well-woman exams. Most women reach this point at about the age of 21 or when they become sexually active.
It’s important for a woman to get regular well-woman exams. About once each year may be fine for you, but you should keep getting annual exams for as long as a healthcare provider recommends them. Our provider at Elite Health Center & Family Care can help you determine how often you should get your exams.
What is covered by insurance?
Well-woman exams are covered by insurance because they’re necessary for a woman’s health. The exams are covered by Medicare. The coverage is for exams every two years for most women, or every year for women who are at high risk for cervical or vaginal cancer. Exams can include a physical along with a pap smear, pelvic exam, and breast exam. We can provide these services in full well-woman exams here at Elite Health Center & Family Care, and we accept major insurance carriers, including Medicare.
Annual GYN Exams include an assessment of:
- Breast Exams
- Mammogram Screenings – Women 40 and up
- Colonoscopy Exams – After age 50
- Bone Density Exams – Age 65 (or sooner if required)
